The football training session is a set of exercises that are interrelated in order to achieve one or more goals. Traditionally, it is subdivided into different parts.

Here the exercises find a progression in terms of complexity and intensity, from low to high during the session.

Gary Fixter — With the development of the training and its study from a more scientific and sociological perspective, in turn more proposals emerged that changed or gave a new vision about its application in the field.

With all this, the training session changed a lot over the years, where it was passed in a more traditional way, extracted from athletics, where the conditional aspects prevailed, sessions very extensive in time and far removed from the reality of the game , to more current training sessions where quality is valued over quantity, where loads are individualized and where technical-tactical work is the axis on which it is developed.

Session types

With the framework of the competition continuously and immediately, we come up with different currents and methodologies on which to fit the training session. Along with this distribution, we must also take into account the day of rest and the adaptation of the session to the moment in which we find ourselves.

According to the type of task

Session to meet the players or the team

They are sessions that aim to know the technical, tactical and physical state of the players or, other characteristics of them. In this session, the trainer gets very important information to establish the objectives of the next sessions and, in turn, to be able to establish certain common objectives in the medium term and the schedule to be used. This type of training session is mainly used during training periods or when the coach arrives new to a club. They will be made up of specific and competitive tasks, to extract more and better information.

Learning session

They are sessions where the main objective is the assimilation of tactical and technical concepts at the individual level and also at the group level. This type of training session serves to establish guidelines to follow and develop depending on the rival. The exercises are of a low intensity and density level and are performed to represent specific situations of the game that we want to reproduce or are going to be given before a specific rival. It is important that these tasks are performed with a low level of fatigue that does not adversely affect concentration.

Repetition session

Its specific objectives are:

* Develop or maintain the level of technical and motor gestures.

* Perfect individual and collective technical-tactical behaviors.

* Integrate technical-tactical processes under conditions of fatigue and high physical demands.

This type of session is greater when it is high within our weekly training unit. They are exercises known to all members and do not contain new themes for the team and are carried out in order to correct, automate or maintain behaviors that occur in the competition. Many repetitions are performed in order to improve and perfect quickly and without altering the correct rhythm of execution

Control session

The main objective of this training session is the assessment, as objective as possible, of the progress of the performance of the players or the team at a technical, tactical, physical and psychological level. We must carry out these sessions through tasks with a basic criterion, taking into account the corrections and the efficiency of the execution. The exercises can be organized:

* Isolated from the competition: Divide the tasks into isolated parts of the game (technical gesture, for example)

* Integrated in the competition: The task is not divided into parts and it is valued on all points of view (technical, tactical, physical and psychological)

According to the content of the session

Selective session

This session develops a single goal of preparation (technique, tactics, physics). It is done only and concentrated in one session. These sessions can be presented in 2 types (6):

1. Selective sessions with uniform means: Use of a single intrasession method to obtain the objective

2. Selective sessions with diversified means: Use of more than one intrasession method to obtain the objective

Complex session

Different objectives and abilities are developed in the same session. The work load is high and can be worked in 2 ways:

1. Complex consecutive sessions: Used only when training skills on a physical level — conditional

2. Simultaneous complex sessions: Used when training is carried out integrating physical, technical and tactical capacities

Supplementary session

It is the training session whose components of the load are oriented to the achievement of secondary objectives in the basic preparation of the soccer player. They are an important part of sports training as they prepare for the main objective of the session. They are also common in the pre-competition and even at the individual level to focus on the individual goals of the footballer
